From the tf2 wiki: Ellis' Cap is a new unlockable headwear item. It's a reference to the hat worn by Ellis, a character from Valve's zombie shooter franchise, Left 4 Dead 2. Beginning October 6th, 2010, Ellis' Cap, along with the Frying Pan, was awarded to anyone who bought Left 4 Dead 2 before Thursday, October 7, 2010, 4pm Pacific Standard Time, as well as anyone who already owned Left 4 Dead 2. According to "Sacrifice: TF2 Items" on the L4D Blog, anyone who owned L4D2 prior to the announcement would receive the item a few days later. Ellis' cap is labeled as untradable and uncraftable in the backpack. (sorry about crushing your hopes)
