New Forum Template

I released the unfinished forum template. I spent a lot of time working on it and haven't had time to complete it, but it works better most of the time.

Some of the pages aren't quite done. Mainly this applies to some of the user control panel stuff. I'll work on it. You can submit bugs here if you want.

Also, It doesn't work in IE6 so get a better browser.

what the fuck! The user info is all on the right now!?

Who cares? I like it. Though, I wish there was a way to disable huge ugly signature pics that take up most of the screen.

That's what this thread is for
Wamp Rats wrote:what the fuck! The user info is all on the right now!?
The user info is less important than the thread itself. Your brain can easily associate the text with the avatar on the right. I have been doing it for months.

Is there anyway to have the signature only appear once per page instead of after every post? I think that would make it better. But I like the new one, I think thats the one I'm using now.

You can disable all signatures by going to User menu/user control panel/board preferences/edit display options.

If I must, I will, but I just meant images in signatures.

I could put a limit on signature size but no one has complained about it before so I never did anything about it.

I can make it cut off at a certain point. Good feedback.

I don't mind having your signature picture being the width of the signature block, but I think your signature (captain) should be the limit for how tall it can be. In addition 1 or 2 lines of text is fair, seeing as the new template is fixed width.

If I complained any time I found something annoying, I would have no friends. (Yes, I currently have friends).

150px height of my banner plus two lines of text (20px line height) = 170px.

Let me know if this seems right (look at wamp's posts).

The steam notification on the right overlaps the text area.

It all looks great to me, much cleaner. I don't think there is anything I would have issue with.

Yes, yes it does.
Not much room for it anywhere else. The text will wrap around it. I could probably add a visual treatment that made it look like part of the right side.

I also want to make a map rating widget (top 5 maps per user, maybe even with screenshots). And a Jukebox widget (top 5 songs per user). It should be alright.

On my 1680x1050 resolution the steam ID info bar blocks part of the post. There's a ton of unused space on each side too.

My biggest grievance is that I have to click 'view' and then a sub-menu to click "new posts"

I know it blocks part of the post and the width is fixed.

Most of the posts we have are short and if your page gets too wide it becomes harder to read.
GrimGriz wrote:My biggest grievance is that I have to click 'view' and then a sub-menu to click "new posts"
I hid the new posts stuff because I didn't know if anyone really used that. I think I browse forums weird. I'll see if I can think of a new place for it.

"Active Topics" was the only link I actually hit on the main page, but it looks like there isn't a spot for it anywhere but the "View" tab. Not a real problem, though.

Yea, but there's no reason to have it the fixed size of the forums to seemingly be that of a 640x480 resolution monitor :raph:

It actually fits perfectly on my 1024x768, which is the norm for most people without massive monitors.

a 17" monitor is nothing nowadays.
So you're saying you don't have like 5 inches of black on both sides?

Re: New Forum Template

by captainAngry
It was made to fit in a 1024 x 768 monitor.

The other reason why it doesn't make sense to make it wider is that most of our posts are shorter than our avatar pics, badges and bio info. If you get wider, you wouldn't really gain any space.

True. I just feel like I have to scroll so much more now.

what i think would be cool is a feature like "quick topics"

what it would do is each forum has a list beneath of the recent 3 (or 5) topics that people posted in. this is so that people don't have to click one link, wait for a new page to load, click another, and wait again. where as is you can click just the topic and wait and there it is.

so it would look like this

I'm liking agent's idea.

I would also like to point out that I lost my "mark all as read" button. I would like that back.

I can definitely do that. That's basically what I do with the announcements area of the homepage.

the only thing i DONT like is the thing with the signatures, idk if anyone else is having the problem (it might have been something you changed) but i have to scroll down to see all of a few peoples signatures (mine included) otherwise i have been using this template since you started working on it and i have no other complaints.
