No Dedicated Servers for CoD:MW2

I'm not sure how many of you have been following this but apparently Call of Duty: Modern Warefare will completely go away from the dedicated server model us PC users know and love. They are apparently going to be utilizing a matchmaking service within steam to find people to match you with.

News has it that you could still play a 'private' match with people. It seems to me that they are trying to make the online PC experience for this game closer to the console version.

I hope this doesn't set a precedent. Can you imagine what it would be like if TF2 was run like this?

i have mw2 pre ordered. when i heard the news i was mad. i was looking forward to having a server for my cod4 clan. but you can tell that infinity ward dont care about the PC community and only care about the consoles. and also no mods either for MW2. and the new maps will cost money. but with COD4 and WAW the maps were free because they included them in the patches

from what i hear, they should be patching this later. it destroys modders from modding the game, plus it drives sales down on server companies. also this new technology will be in l4d2 matchmaking. but valve added the server browser.

Last week, when Infinity Ward revealed it was dropping dedicated servers from the PC build of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in favor of a new matchmaking infrastructure called IWNET, it was like someone sucker-punched the PC gaming community....

The lack of dedicated servers also means Activision Blizzard controls what mods, if any, will be allowed. You can't control what maps are running on the server, and fan-made maps offered for free may be a thing of the past, replaced by for-pay content, if this model catches on. This changes the relationship between the community and the publisher: you used to be able to buy a house and move in, but now you'll have to ask permission to paint the walls of your rental...

"I can only speak for the guys I know about," Wilks said. "A poll on our site suggests that 75 percent have canceled preorders. As for what the community will do, well, if [Infinity Ward] stays with just IWNET, then we won't be supporting Modern Warfare 2. We will find other games to play." [MOAR]

There's a lot of ramifications to not having dedicated servers, and all of them have a general theme of LOLOLOLOLOL MOAR MONEY LOLOLOLOL.

That being said, I'm glad people are actually cancelling their preorders and genuinely fighting the power. I'm also giggling like a schoolgirl because I hate COD4 and thought it was a horrifically overrated piece of shit.

Regardless, Activision and that cuntsmith Bobby Kotick will be able to build mansions out of dollar bills anyway because LOLOL COD4 R TEH BEST EVAR

My friend hosted his own matchmaking server and we did this with the mod that gives you the console. it was hilarious. everyone thought we were hacking and then they found out it was for everyone. it was fun.
