What I hate is how in EVERY DAMN GAME there's a part where a gear is missing and you have to look in every nook and cranny to get it.

Especially in Amnesia: Dark Descent where you don't know what dark evil shadow mutant beastcreatureabomination is after you.
Also when there's only one way for said gear to fit even though it's not at all clear which way it is and there's no actual difference that gear angle makes to whatever pointless obstacle machine the designers have deposited in your way.
