Ah to be young again. My last put-me-in-the-poor-house event happened while I wasn't working and cost me just under $3500. Emptied out my savings account. I'm just now getting all my bills on track and getting on with my life and I still have 2 days of community service and 2 years of probation left.

Lawyers, court fee's and fines mostly.

I would opt out for defending myself instead of paying the evil bastards. Just study up the night before your court date.

The reason to have a lawyer is that they can go in and talk to the judge before you have your arraignment. The first judge I had wanted me to spend 4 days in jail so my lawyer just rescheduled the date to get a better judge for my case. If you don't have a lawyer, you basically have to take what they give you and I was facing up to 90 days in jail.

A lot of people get DWIs. In Minnesota 1 in 8 licensed drives has a DWI. Shit happens to normal people.
