What exactly are you focusing on in your graphic design work? I can give you some pointers/advice. Been working in PS/Illy for about 7 years now.

I'm really doing more programming the graphic design... However I do find it interesting and would love to do some stuff in my spare time.

My biggest issue is find good software to use, ( Preferabley free but now that i have a job i can pay for stuff if I really need to.) besides that I can't find any good tutorials to help me get started ( Note: as of this post I have been to lazy to even look for any )

If you're in college, companies will often have a student version of software. For example, I was able to get a one year license of 3DS Max (modelling software) for free.
