So I opened up SDK for the first time in a year or two.

And honestly, I wanted to shoot myself.
So many possibilities. Why have I not pushed myself to learn it? Why is it so difficult :'(
Any tips to start out with?

Have a plan.
Do basics first, test gameplay. Then detail.
Hammer is a pretty easy editor, just gotta get in the flow.

Is using hollow to make rooms a bad idea?

It's a lot easier in the long run just to drag out brushes to make rooms imo.
Hollow is OK, but it always makes the 6 brushes, which may or may not be the size you want...

Plus it is potentially less optimized, if you're an optimization freak.

Oh, OK.
I have ideas for maps, I just gotta take my time :/
If I try to create a section of a map real quick out of pure idea then the rest gets fucked up and it's scrapped.
