Looking For Group for other(s) Free MMO(s) Thread

Unread post by Boreas »

Hey I was wondering if anyone is, unlikely, or is possibly planning to start playing any of the free mmo's, or at least not subscription fee, like D&&D Online, EQ II, LotR (Later this year), Guild Wars or host of other micro transaction MMOs?

I know captain was thinking of starting up Guild Wars, and some others have thought about it. If you want to lavish your undying love for WoW, please do it in your own thread (though its a perfectly fine game). If you feel like bashing games, again please do it in your own thread. I am just intrested in people who are thinking about picking something up, like myself, at least until 4most gets done having a life, and then I can go back to RTS games. Or not, MMOs can kind of be addicting.

As mush as I hate to admit it, Dungeon Fighter Online has really peeked my interest. It doesn't seem like the kind of traditional MMO you're thinking of Boreas, it's based on the time tested arcade formula of golden axe-esque beat 'em ups. I blame the fact that I was raised on Altered Beast but I love ol' fashion'd beat 'em ups. Yes, it's uner the reign of the soulless money grabbing empire known as Nexon but I still really wanna try it out. If anyone else wants to try, pm me, post a reply, or sent me a telepathic message saying so.

Guild Wars is pretty dead, but the Guild Wars 2 looks like its going to be kickin rad. I might play with you guys in LotRo, as I already have a 50 and some alts.

Well I'm in the process of patching Dungeon Figher Online, but I'm skeptical about this game as a actually "mmo" or mmo flavored wrapper. Second, I'm also leary of game build on mechanics from the dark of ages of collision detection. Don't get me wrong I love golden axe, and the Xmen Arcade Brawler was the closest thing to Nirvana I'll ever get. However, like Altered Beast, on the other hand, seemed like a good game at the time as I've matured I realized it was in fact a horrible game. Still, like I said I'm patching it now so drop me a line when you wanna play.

Next, Rift, guild wars being dead might actually be a selling point to me, don't get me wrong I love having people running around a open world, but theres the whole WoW problem of people have been there done that, kinda takes away the magic of exploring a world for me. Thats why I'm asking people here if their intrested in picking up a game with me, instead of getting online in one and trying to make new friends. And your right Guild Wars 2 looks to be pretty awesome,

Well I sat down with Dungeon Fighter Online and played through the tutorial bit, and I have to admit its intresting, my original concern over the technology it is built on is still valid however. Still I think its intresting enough to give it a spin, so like I said let me know when you want to play (my steam account stays active most of the time even if I'm not around I'll check back).

Anyone else have anything else they want to play?

I play Guild Wars every few months or so, it's not as dead as it seems as long as you can find a good group (good organized pug groups are harder to find) with some friends and heroes and whatnot.

It's a great sub-free game and you'll definitely get more content than what you pay for (including the expansions if you wanna get that into it).

NOTE: I reworked this post to take out some the negatives that I exaggerated or have been removed since I stopped playing.

Here's the pros/cons of LotRo:

Pros
The game is fucking beautiful if you have DX10 graphics, and looks good with DX9 (I was floored when I upgraded to Windows 7 and turned the graphics all the way up for the first time)

A few of the classes are quite unique (There's nothing quite like a runekeeper or loremaster in other mmos)

The game is fun to explore, and the main quest holds your hand through the early exploration

The game is designed to be roleplayed at all times, so lots of goofy stuff like adopting players as your children, giving yourself a last name, and titles (Riftoff, Seeker of Deep Places; Hellfire the Enormous Faggot) all over

Being able to switch between three sets of armor on the fly. Only one of the counts as far as stats go, but you can use the other two sets for cool/ridiculous/roleplay-ey looking stuff

Cosmetics are better than any other mmo of this kind. You can dye any piece of clothing or armor, and even some of the lowlevel stuff looks cool. (I'm going to be mad if WoW doesn't take some tips from LotRo in this department when Cata comes out)

Moria is one of the most 3D areas in an mmo ever. Lots of cool elevation. There's nothing quite like exploring it and they pack lots of stuff into a smaller space.

The base weapon design for stuff like two handed axes are hella cool.

The playerbase is eminently trollable; there's a balance between naivety, self-importance and bombast in the playerbase that I found absolutely delectable

The human and elf starting areas are pretty cool. The hobbit is fun to explore, but has a really wonky leveling flow. Dwarf area is meh, but eventually links to Elf area

Turbine is kinda desperate for players, so customer service will bend over backwards for you.

You haven't lived until you've played More Than A Feeling on virtual bagpipes in a virtual tavern.

Music is hilarious, fun, and unique to LotRo

Cons
The endgame is archaic, but the flood of new people might bring it forward.

The grind to get "talents" and virtues is the worst thing (For example, suppose you make a melee dps character. You start with the move "Bunnyfart". Bunnyfart does nothing that'll make it viable for use, unless you complete your class deed for that move. Completing that deed will require you to use Bunnyfart (in its weak, useless form) 1000 times. But it only counts the first 100 times you use it every day, so you'll have to use Bunnyfart for 10 days of heavy play before it becomes viable. All that is just one move. You'll have to do this several times. Virtues (which is where most of your stats come from) are even worse, and involve killing 100s of a certain type of mob in a certain region

The population has a lot of o/c lore ("I've read the Silmarrion twice and can speak elven") sperglords. (I'm going to leave this in here, but looking back these guys can be cool in their dorky way. Hell, one of the reasons I stopped playing LotRo was that one of my game friends who fit this stereotype had to quit playing after a family tragedy :smith: Dude was a total dork, but he was always helpful and fun to talk to. His incessant use of Elvish grew on me.)

Moria is one of the most 3D areas in an mmo ever. The maps are utterly useless, you can't use your mount without a rep grind or a microtransaction, and there are ways to horribly fuck up what you are doing. (There's literally a hole in the ground right next to a bunch of early Moria questgivers that will trap you in a higher level area if you fall into it. Everyone, I repeat everyone, has fallen into this hole.)

PVP is a cool concept, but not many people do it. You get to make an orc or spider or whatever and fight with normal players in an area set apart for PVP

You can't pick which three crafting things you want, you have to pick from premade sets. (There aren't many of them and a few aren't very viable)

The legendary item system is based on giving items random class specific enhancements, and can suck when you just want your axe to give you a certain combination of these enhancements, and the rng decides to fuck with you.

A lot of whats "built in" to most mmos (like rolling on loot) is manual in LotRo.

You have to turn your graphics down when in raid with more than 8~ players (Depends on your computer, but this is a universal problem)

You guys should try DFO for sure. Me, Doghouse, Surnem, and sometimes Crocket all play together. It's REALLY fun. Like, REALLY REALLY FUN. Even Hell Mode is fun, even if it is the most difficult thing about the game. We walked in with 3 guys, all FAR above the recommended level for that dungeon. We walked into the boss room, killed the thing containing the boss, and promptly got our asses handed.

I found the secret to DFO.
1) Create a character
2) Go to a dungeon
3) Let doghouse's pokemon rejects do all the work.
4) Make fun of the chat filter
5) Reference an old meme
6) ???
7) PROFIT!!!!

Yeah this is pretty much how it goes, I didn't know how many DFO people we had hanging around. Though you guys are kinda of missing the point, I wanted to get into a mmo to explore and experince with people, not already have them all be gods to my character basically. Plus, after playing it the technology still bugs me, I won't lie.

The other MMO I was rolling with was Dungeons and Dragons Online, which I am loving. I have played D&D once using the 3.5 rules so I pretty much hopped right in and understood the game, but the game is kinda daunting for those who don't know whats what. Some really cool features and, unfortunatly, some questionable design decisions.

I dislike DFO greatly. 6 Characters to pick from, all of them practically never look different from their original look. The combat system is horrible, needing almost pin point accuracy to be on the horizontal line as the enemy to attack it, more likely to attack a teammate attempting to try and run around the enemy. It's trying to be the Gauntlet Street Fighter but without your 3 other friends to play with, they input thousands of random people.

A list of the free mmo's I know of.

Well I'm playing Dungeons and Dragons Online right now, Doghouse supposly has it as well. Free to play and its quite well done. That being said, it looks like a fair amount of us are going to pick up Lord of the Rings Online in about ~20 days. BTW I call the loremaster class for our little group.

Ugh, I took a look at the free to play info on lotro, and since I've already seen most of the game's content, I know what it actually means. The completely free-to-play for people who've never played lotro before is basically a rebranded free trial. It's not that bad considering this stuff doesn't cost much, but if you're planning to go completely free, don't expect to see much.

While I don't have the witty ugh of Riftoff, I do have some thoughts about LoTR Online. Assuming Turbine does the same thing, or similar, to the same thing they did with Dungeons and Dragons Online then the whole game will actually be kinda of like a unlockable. In DDO you can get turbine points for completing quest and you can purchase more game content with them. Of course to get all the game content you would have to do every quest with like five diffrent characters. However, if Rift is right, and this isn't like that, then I'm probably not going to spend much time playing LoTR Online. Still Turbine did good work with DDO, so heres hoping.

EDIT: I misunderstood Boreas, and he misunderstood me. We both had some jargon mixed up. Put simply, if you want to try this game by all means do so, but don't expect to see a ton of content without paying for it.

Perhaps I was unclear, so I'll forgive your misunderstanding. DDO you don't have all the quest unlocked, however you can use turbine points to unlock more by doing the quest you have. For example, in this starting village there are three quest directly in the village that you can play for free (and give you turbine points), with a 4th that you can unlock via pack purchase, which you can buy with the turbine points. Etc Etc as you go out into each new "zone". Again, I don't know if LoTR Online will be like this, but I assume turbine will keep the same modus operandi.

Lord of the Rings Online just went free to play today, and D2D is having a sale where you can buy a month VIP pass plus 1000 turbine points for $5, plus if you get 10 dollars more worth of stuff you can use the code PAX to get $5 off. Just a heads up.

I've got D&D Online, but I'm not one to pay money for things that I can either find with a little work or don't really need. Haven't played in forever, still in the first town, probably like level 6 or 7, if that, Ranger.

I'll look into LoTR online, but I probably won't get it. Not because I dislike the books, but because I'm not really looking for new MMOs. I might check out Guild Wars 2 or DCUO, but I'm not sure.

I got the free LOTR Online. I actually kind of like it. It shares many characteristic with WoW but with better graphics. The downside is that the game lags every 5 minutes. Other than that, I suggest getting the free version of the game.

Bumping this to say that I may have leaned negative in my previous posts, LotRO is great game and if you're interested in MMOs, it's great for newbies. It's also one of the few that manages to have a strong roleplaying-lite community. Like people seriously care about the lore, but aren't going to sperg out if you don't and the people who don't know it aren't balls retarded "I'm a 20,000 year old vampire dragon from the future that looks like an elf chick" Plus you get to learn how to say hi in Elvish within minutes of joining a decent guild :c00l:

As an aside, I've mentioned this a bajillion times before when talking about this game, but the time followed someone around playing "Rock You Like A Hurricane" on the bagpipes and lute is still one of my favorite gaming moments ever. :allears:

I have never heard of these games and i don't want to go through this thread reading all the crap... Yes i have been longing to play a game but considering that most of the MMO's I've played is real money makes you more powerful and leaves everyone else at a disadvantage who don't want to spend their money on the game... I request someone to tell me what game i should get I've been reading SOME and I am currently thinking of getting DFO and currently i need more MMOs to play in my spare time when i'm not killing zombies in L4d2 so just give me the gist of it and there is a higher chance I'll download it and play if more people do the same
