Starcraft 2!!!!

Unread post by Daedalus »

Welp, seeing as SC2 is being released on Tuesday, I'm interested in how many others will be playing. Post your B.net names here (not RealID, should be in the form of nickname.###)

I will update this post with my name as soon as I create it.

I'm thinking about picking it up, but only for the single player game. Maybe in a couple of months they might have some worthwile use map setting maps to play multiplayer, but thats about all the enjoyment I expect to get out of it.

I'm probably going to pick it up in a week or two. Depends on when I get money.

I sorta want to pick it up, but I'd rather save that money to get a decent PC/Laptop (Don't see how it would help though, seeing as how I need $600/700. D:< I hate being poor). I probably wouldn't be able to run it on this laptop anyway.

eh, RTSs aren't very graphic-heavy. Sure, this is new, but they've never been great in the detail department.

Correction: RTS games can be VERY graphic heavy.

However, SC II was designed to use fairly modest requirements. The only problem you will likely run into is your grahpics card, but if you have a middle of the line one from anywhere up to like 5 years ago you should be fine.

Both my brothers (older then me, grew up on SC) have it and are playing it. They seem to like it, say it's basically SC with spit-shine and nerfage. Never been on fan of RTS (No trollin'), mainly because I grew up on Mortal Combat, Platforms, and played my first (violent) shooter at 9 (Final Doom and Wolfenstien). Though my first PC game was CS:S.

I tried getting into RTS's many moons ago with a little game called "Supreme Commander".
I got fucked up my tactical ass by the greatest military minds I've ever seen and then the game crashed because apparently my pussy computer can't handle 1000 units at once. The experience kinda left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't bothered with the things since then.
I may pick this up though, considering I really like Blizzard and all. Depends on how noob friendly it is.

As I said, give it a couple months before any good use map setting maps show up probably.

As with all RTS games, none of them are particular "noob" friendly when it comes to multiplayer. Its because the pool of people who play it is much smaller then those of other multiplayer games, like TF2. Considered if you took the top say 10% of TF2 players and their the only ones who played, it would be tough to stand up in those circumstances. In addition, you actually have to know what your doing, any fool can run around a shooter and get kills. The first time I played modern warefare 2 at my friends house I got 3 kills in a row online, sometimes you get lucky, when both people are turning a corner tactics doesn't really involve itself.

That being said, thats why I very rarely play rts games online, while I'm probably good enough to win the occasional game, its not really for me. I much prefer to play around with friends, even if its just against the computer. Thats why KIA and I started the RTS club.

SC2 has a practice league online, where none of your games are ranked and all pathways are blocked off by destructible debris. These are 50 games you can play before you get put into a league and get your games ranked, so you have plenty of time to get used to the game online and they are pretty laid back.

After that you get 5 placement matches for each ranked game type (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, FFA) for yourself and any team you make

Even if you lose all 5 of them you'll be placed against people playing similar to you and it wont be all that tough

The game also provides different single player challenges that give you ideas on how to play better and stuff

oh and Boreas, you dont know how awful this GUI is seriously even with a thousand amazing new UMS games available you'll probably still only be able to play the 20 most popular. Don't buy it for UMS, unless Blizzard put out a patch to fix this crap.

like what? AoE3 is the only one that I can think of that was at its time. Other than that I've never had a problem running any rts, and ive never had even close to a high end computer.

As with most games you can crank down the settings and the game will run on low end systems. The first rts game to mind that used a lot of power for its time is World In Conflict, it was one of the bench mark games for one of the pc magazines in its time. Heres a exerpt from several years back when it first came out.

"The visuals in World in Conflict are brilliant on all fronts and provide an easy entry point for all comers to immediately sink in and enjoy some fast-action strategy though the price of entry may be expensive if you're only in it for the big effects. Running everything on very-high at 1900x1200 can cause some serious frame rate dips on even a computer with an 8800GTX, 2GB of RAM and a Quad Core processor when the effects really start flying. Thankfully, the game still looks pretty at medium detail, which most medium range PCs should have no problem with.

Most FPS are heavyier on the graphics because thats all they have to offer, but some RTS games can be quite demanding, I doubt my computer right now could even handle some of them set to their max.

The THQ games are very graphic heavy. THQ RTS games = Company of Heroes, Dawn of War.

They utilize cover and weapon types, such as rifles hardly hurt tanks, a rifleman squad behind a stone wall has better defense than a squad behind a hay bale. Overall I love both series.

I was never a huge fan of where THQ took their series, though both games are really well done, they require far more micromanaging of units then I like. Dawn of War II does away with base building all together. It is hard to lock down sectors in Company of Heroes, and largely impossible in Dawn of War II, there are almost no defensive buildings. So you tend to get very fluid battles where you have to pay close attention to your units. However, I have come to enjoy the multiplayer aspects from all the games I've played with 4most/KIA, Still I like to build massive armys of death that lay waste to all that stands before them, and that doesn't happen so much in those.

The game were meant to be realistic, you won't be able to build a full sized defensive base in real life, maybe air drop in a turret but other than that, your meant to use squads and units to defend.

I would hardly beleive the games were meant to be realistic, when you can build a tank on the front lines in 30 seconds or so, I'm pretty sure it was a design choice to keep the enviroment fluid.
