seizure inducing game behaviour

well, looks like the last update to Steam broke something for me. im pretty much having this exact problem.

TF2: High ping-like lag in game, but my ping is fine!

its frustrating as hell. cant change weapons. movement is seizure-like/inducing. no ping issues. unable to type any text. limited use of voice chat.

ive gone over the networking, investigating paths to various servers. all seem fine. im using the same ISP as the OP in the thread linked above.

ive poked around at the network stuff with hping and bmon and a few other tools -- i think something may possibly be setting off some sort of rate shape on the ISP side, but no way of being sure. of course, you call support, they are about as intelligent as "the hordes" and claim all is well (they wouldnt know anyways, take if from someone that knows their support structure). :stupid:

big clue to this being a steam-related issue -- started happening directly after a steam platform update. go valve.

well, its been nearly two weeks and its come down to....
Steam Support wrote:This is a problem I havent seen before.
and they have suggested a windows repair -- not an actual soltuion to the problem. and pretty much pointless, i might as well just reinstall windows.

That sucks. Steam support is a joke.

indeed it is. i think i knew more about windows and drivers than these guys did.

anyways, ive got windows back up and running again. things seem to be working at this time. but i still wont call the problem 'resolved'. again, reinstalling windows was not a solution to the problem

im still of the opinion that something was introduced in one of the may/june updates that threw things into a tailspin.

Stupid answer, but did you check to see if your firewall started blocking Steam after the title update?

so this problem returned on friday night. good times.

i did a full reinstall of steam as outlined here:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki ... ling_Steam

... with one difference, i deleted my steam folder. ive got a 10Mbit connection, so re-downloading isnt a big deal for me, and i would rather ensure that ive got clean game content. all the mods i make to the game can be easily done in the GUI.

Good Luck, Doesn't seem like I could think of anything that you wouldn't have already checked.

yea. i should copy the thread. its bloody ridiculous.

the full reinstall of steam seems to have helped -- but the problem seems to periodically return.
