Wish I could have captain angry's job, and get paid 38 an hour for monitoring TF2 servers/forums XD man that's the dream job. How did you get that to happen?! Anywho, for now I need to look for a part time job but I'm not having luck getting any call backs. Anyone know of a well paying work place that will hire someone who is 18 and has little job experience?

My job isn't all glory. I graduated from a private Technical College with a 3.9GPA an A.A.S. degree in Information Technology. When I graduated I had no idea what to do next so I decided to put my resume online and see what happened. I was contacted by a technical recruiter from a placement company called Spherion (now Technisource).

If you don't know what a placement company does it's kind of like temp work. Companies go to the placement company and tell them who they are looking for and for how long, and then the company goes out and finds someone to fit the position. The placement company then sets up the interview, does a background check and all of that stuff. The benifit is that when my contract is up, they look for other work for me and send me on interviews. They can also call the person who interviews you right after the interview and ask them how you did etc. so you find out right away.

My first Job out of college was at Best Buy Corporate doing front-end web development. That included everything from developing prototypes for BestBuy.com and building the Black Friday Doorbusters page to building websites from scratch for companies Best Buy had acquired.

While I was there I networked with a lot of people. Two of my co-workers had moved on to greater opportunities at Thomson Reuters, where I work now. They were looking for someone with my skill set and called me up to see if I would consider leaving Best Buy. I decided I would go to the interview and see what they had to offer.

During the process I negotiated an almost 50% raise from what I was making at Best Buy and decided there was no way I could turn it down. That's where I am today.

Everyone has to find their own way. I will say that I wouldn't be where I am today without the ability to network with those around me.

My only other peice of advice is that if you are looking for work don't put anything benieth you. I worked in food service for a long time and everywhere I went I got promoted. Once you can hit supervisor at any food service place, you will be a supervisor wherever you go in the industry. A good food service job that isn't as disgusting as say McDonalds (I worked at Arby's which is pretty much the same) is Coffee.

I worked in the Coffee business for over 3 years and, while stressful at times, I perfected the art of making a perfect latte and the job was very rewarding for me.

I read it all. Very interesting and helpful. I have had one job but got paid 4 bucks an hour for hard labor... It was a under the table kind of thing.. not really a job I want to even mention I did in interviews. So I guess I will start off working at a movie theatre or something. Easier said than done! My last resort is somewhere like McDonalds. But, everyones got to start somewhere. Thanks for the post Captain.

If you do end up working at McDonalds it is very easy to get promoted, although it could take some time. As with any job, when you first start keep your eyes open and your mouth shut. Learn as much as you can and you will succeed.

If you don't know what you want to do with your life, you could see if you couldn't find a job as a dishwasher somewhere at a restaurant. Some principle there, learn everything you can and you will easily be promoted (provided you put in your time). Jobs like prep cook in a restaurant are always in need of people who know what they are doing.

Well seeing as I want to be a chef and am going to school for that... I would LOVE to work in a restaurant.... any job I could get in one would be the greatest thing ever.

Oh man, you should have no problem getting a job as a dishwasher. Look for a shitty job at a decent resturant and tell them that you want to learn as much as you can and that you are going to culinary school. It will help you make connections with people that work in the industry, even if you only go in for a few hours a day and do the dishes.
