I think people don't quite get the whole thing to loli vs. lolicon (Or what exactly a loli is).

They're different. A loli is a prepubescent girl, normally who has feeling toward an older man, but not necessarily, recently, time has changed loli to basically any young girl who trys to make her self look sexually attractive. A lolicon, however, is and older man who is sexually attracted to prepubescent girls. This is where "Lolita complex" comes in. Lolita is a book by Vladimir Nabokov outlining his obsession of a girl (no further detail is needed or given), Lolita is his obsession, a 12 year old girl. Lolita complex refers to anyone with this type of obsession. Through horrible accent, it became lo-lee-a-com (Com being an abbreviation for complex (those lazy Asians)) in Japan, and then confusing it with a different grammar concept, became lolicon.

It's the same for shotacon, though I'm not familiar with the origins of "shota".

The only reason I know this is because....

there was an extremely long debate on grammar on this anime site, involving the usage of -con (sometimes romanized -kon) and -desu endings. -con always refers to an older person, while -desu normally is a self derogatory ending which refers to your ranking. I don't know how this conversation got started, but for some odd reason, I remember this grammar concept.
