Re: Mic problems
This happens to Wamp Rats as well, as his mic works everywhere else but in the server. I think this may be the type of connection you and the server are making, and because either the server is uncompatible with your connection or your CPU/RAM is eating out all your computer energy to be able to transfer voice, your voice connection fails. I will try to seek more info.
I've found that some issue may reside in the sound card. What kind do you have?
You may also want to try out some troubleshooting, like testing the mic with other features of the computer or steam, testing other mics with the game, and testing sound card compatibility, Windows input settings, and stuff like that. The problem is that there can be so many wrong issues that can come up, and unless you know specifically what's wrong, nobody can help you. Try to get as much detail as you can about this and either post here or search google with it, because if you have a problem, its HIGHLY likely that somebody else had it too and posted it with a solution somewhere else.

Re: Mic problems
Sound drivers would be my guess. If it happened more often you could gain access to a new mic and see if that fixes it. If a new mic didn't fix it you would at least know for sure that it isn't your mic. Who knows, it could just be a short in the mic.
Re: Mic problems
while my mic is still buzzy, it seems to be pretty stable now. ive found that i mainly have problems when ive unplugged one of the devices into the front or back panel. the sound config seems to get brainwashed afer that. no idea why.
i basically went in and reconfigured _everything_. the only thing i didnt do was reinstall the sound drivers. is your sound card by chance a SoundMAX HD card with a front panel access and device detection? re-running the wizard-thing seems to clear things up. if you dont have that -- try the latest SoundMAX drivers for your card (should be availble via your mobo manufacturer) and run the sound wizard. after that, fire up TF2 and recalibrate the mic.

Re: Mic problems
I just got a new mic because people kept complaining that mine was too quiet. Everyone said it sounded great last night. It was a Stereo USB Headset 250 by Logitech and ran about $20 at Target. The headset is comfortable and it is Skype certified.
Figured I would post just in case someone was looking.

Re: Mic problems
I never really talk on mine so I don't know if it works or not.
I'll try it next time.
Man Cap you played last night and I missed it!
The first time I don't play all week and people get on.
Psh.
