Requesting Input from the People!

Well, now that 1.0 is out, and it looks like craftbukkit is on its way, I will start rebuilding the server into something really awesome this Thanksgiving weekend.

There will be some noticeable changes (warning, spoilers are long).
  • - No individual groups (treelord, weatherman, etc) ---
    I don't like these groups. I really don't. They waste my time. Each time I configure the server I put these groups in. They take up a lot of time to create, and nobody ever uses them. Only 0 - 1 players are in each group, and even with the one player groups, those players rarely come on anymore. When was the last time you've seen any of the following people make significant contributions to the server lately?:
    • + Teeheem (Tree Lord)
      + andilitebandit (World Editor)
      + Chrisbev (Economy Admin)
      + Harlan666 (Weather Man)
      + zZChronoZz (Librarian [time changer])
      + Satan (Hell Moderator)
      + Can't think of any more at the moment...
    Some other groups not used at the moment are:
    • + Chat Admin
      + Group Manager
      + Teleport Admin
      + Moderator
      + Semi Admin
      + Admin
      + Super Admin
      + Elder
      + Jailed
    These groups put more of a class division in my server. The division has turned into
    • + People with power
      + People with no power
    This is fine, and all, but even though there seem to be a few people with special groups, they seem to be very noticeable. Especially with their special chat prefixes and all. Why not remove the prefix? Because they it'd be weird having some people with no prefixes. Why not remove all of the prefixes? Because that's just lame.

    To sum it all up, I haven't seen these people make significant contributions to the server in a while, so I am removing these groups. Yes, some of these people might leave, but they haven't shown much dedication to the server. I only see their faces on the server when they have their powers. I don't want a power hungry community. We all know what happened on Secret Legend's server.
    - More Staff ---
    We. Need. More. Staff. (I understand, staff means people who get paid, but I just use staff because of a lack of a better word). Yeah, I have finally come to realize this. Right now!? No. In the future? Definitely. Do not ask me for admin or whatever you dream of being. That will only decrease your chances. In the past, I have selected people to help administrate the server without them asking. So far, its worked pretty well. I use my judgement on who should help me run the server. Not you. Just because you have been going on the server for a few months now doesn't mean that you'll get a position.
    So, why am I getting more staff? Well, Its been hard for me to do all the crap I do outside of minecraft/server and whatnot and run the server at the same time. I've done it pretty well so far, but school has kept me busy. When (/if) the server traffic picks up, I'll be needing some help.
    - No omnipotent ruler (me) ---
    Well, after having all the power at my fingertips for a year now (its been that long :o ), I have had my fun, and I don't feel like being in creative 24/7 anymore. I like to play minecraft in survival, too. It puts a bad image on the server when someone joins and there is this man parading (and flying) around the server with the [Owner] prefix, and he has creative and all that. Yes, when there is a trouble maker on the loose, me, or some other mod will have the proper resources to make sure that the server and its people are taken care of. I'm just saying that I don't think I should be flying around the server being all godlike and whatnot. People like staff/administrators who don't make sure that they are higher on the food chain than the regulars.
    - More Groups ---
    I think the server needs more groups. More multi-person groups. Like, the group promised ages ago, the Redstoner group. I'll all the groups that we are used to, but I'm going to try to make it so that its more like a class system of sorts. I don't really know yet. I don't know what I'll do about it. I'm just not sure if I'm taking the server the right way by having a hierarchy like I have now. People don't like to come on a server and be a lowly "traveler" while there are all these people with rainbow names. I'll be sure to come up with something soon that will implement a good group system without deterring people.
    - A Server Web Site ---
    I found a person who is willing to make the server a website. He already built a large deal of it (I don't know why), and I think it looks pretty good. Its just frustrating for me to relay all of the info to everybody using these forums. My server section on the forums is in an awkward place that isn't the easiest to find, and though I can use a url shortener like tinyurl, its a general internet rule of thumb to stay away from those. Especially from weird places, like a mysterious server...
    - Server Stability ---
    I fixed it. I really did! The server will no longer crash constantly. As for the random disconnects, I think that might have something to do with my retarded router. Maybe not. I haven't seen too many disconnection errors in a while now. Then again, with the dedicated server I had a few weeks ago, I had no log/console to easily view, so I have no idea if people were still having problems. Anyways, the entire server crashing problem has been eliminated. This means that I don't have to buy new parts!
    - Consistent Map ---
    I have changed the map so many times lately. I guess you all deserve a pretty good thorough explanation for this. The map generator has been constantly changing lately. When the map generator changes, the server's map seed stays the same. The map seed is a "randomly" generated set of numbers that tells the server how to generate the map. For instance, you can type in the exact same seed on two completely different servers and get the exact same map. However, when the map generator changes, the seed stays the same, and the new map generator responds differently to the old seed, meant for the previous map generator.

    The result? An awkward looking map. All of the map generated with the previous generator will look fine, but them there is an obvious difference where the map is generated by the new generator. All parts of the map completely changes. Imagine walking through fields, and then this sudden wall. A mountain biome cutting into these fields. Its just a fine slice, cutting through the chunk lines. Imagine sailing through an ocean and then suddenly... Desert. You can have one foot in an ocean biome and one foot in a desert biome. Yes, this is possible, but it looks horrendous. The map looks something like this: Image

    This might not be to apparent, because people explore, and then nobody goes to the "edge" of the nice map ever again. However, people do travel far, and nobody likes to see this. However, minecraft is officially released, and I don't expect the map generator to change for a while. This means that the map will have enough time to grow to such a size that one will have to walk for a very long time to come across such a structure as shown above.

    So, bottom line, even if the map generator does change, the map will stay the same.
tl;dr right? well I had a lot to say :P

Anyways, those are the changes/directions I plan on taking the server. Now, for the user input part. I've always planned on setting up a server this way, but now with a stable official release of minecraft now, I can make this a reality. I'm not going to dictate how the server is going to be set up. I am going to install the base plugins that makes the server work (antigrief, groups, etc), but it will be up to you, the server clients, to discuss what you want on the server. What commands, what plugins. What you want to see implemented, what you want gone. Now is your chance to be heard, and I'm all ears!

Has terrain generation code changed in 1.0, if not can we get a look at the old map...

now that i think of it it wont be any good, because the only chunks that have the new content will be the chunks that arent spawned yet as of the map version...

damn my thinking ahead but typing behind.

Don't add too much plugins, it will lag the server.
Do add a plugin that will make a map every so often or maybe even DynMap (although that does cause lag).
A town plugin like Towny might be appreciated too, but I don't know everyone else's opinion on this, since there was a bit of discussion about this before.
Also, and I guess you were planning on adding it anyway, add an iEconomy plugin and limit the use of /tp or /home.

That is what I'd do with the server, but I'm sure a lot of people here will have other ideas.
