Family friendly?

Unread post by g_e_oos »

Okay so I know this is not a "Family Friendly" server but I was just wondering if we could start toning it down a little bit. I don't mind the cussing so much as the people who get really pissed and start going nuts and blaming people. Another thing, I don't like how the content of what people are talking about is getting progressively worse. A few nights ago people were talking about porn and other things. This goes way past the spectrum of "Family Friendly" and I just don't feel comfortable with people talking about it. It wasn't horrible but I'm afraid of where the server is headed. Any comments on how anyone feels or where we should draw the line?

I hesitate to draw a line since there are always exceptions and it would be way too complicated to tone down. My only suggestion is that admins should support eachother when they think things are getting inappropriate. They either need to mute people or work together to get people to understand that they need to tone it down.

Anything graphic (sexually or violently) should be monitored and taken care of. Like I said, it is tough to draw a line and say this is okay and this isn't but the people I appoint to higher admins should be able to make this judgement call and take care of it. If none of those people are around, it is up to the •cC• members that are.

I'll do my best to answer any specific questions anyone has related to this.

I am pretty sure I was on that night and there were two things going on. First off was just general off the cuff more adult topics which you reference as "Porn." The second was swearing and putting other people down in the server. In my opinion the latter is much worse. I don't mind swearing and in this day and age you can't avoid it no matter how hard you try. However, no one should be put down in a way that tries to degrade them or make them go all cutty on themselves.

Constructive criticism is one thing, telling you that you suck and that you should jump off a cliff is another.

I know it wasn't that bad that night. however, since the server has been drifting farther in that direction I have a feeling it will end up like other servers are where they are waaaay too inappropriate. I can't stand being on servers like that (I call them Xbox servers) and I would hate seeing my favorite server end up like that.

I don't intend to let it get that far out of hand but at 3 am, what can you expect? It's just too hard to moderate that kind of thing. We'll figure it out.

No matter how "cartoon" like the style of the graphics are it doesn't disguise what the game is. You play different classes where the main intent is to kill the other players. There is no restriction for the amount of blood, guts, and the occasional pancreas that you deal with in game. Therefore, the game is meant to be played by a mature audience. (The ESRB has it rated M.)

It would be ridiculous to enforce a G language restriction to a Mature rated game.

"Excuse me Mr. Soldier, would you like a spot of tea"
"Very Good sir, do you have any biscuits?"
"I'm afraid I don't... guess you score a point sir"
...Ridiculous

I'm not disputing that the game is mature. It's what the game is rated mature for. Like you said blood guts I don't care. The ESRB has this game rated mature for "Blood and Gore, Intense Violence" not people talking about how much sex they've had in the last week. It's just I would prefer this server not to become one of the other servers on this game that i hate playing on. I'm fine where it is now but I'm afraid it's going to get worse. Oh and when there is barely any people on I really don't care what is said and it shouldn't be regulated nearly as much.

If I understand your argument correctly, you're saying that we should censor topics of sex and other adult themes because you don't come across them in the game?

Something that would be taboo is talking about how I picked up a hooker last night and partook in some of her services.

However, picking up someone off the street, slitting their throat and watching them bleed out on the sidewalk would be perfectly fine because hey, we can kill people in the game.

If you say that we should censor everything that is not age appropriate then stick with that, but you can't suddenly say you can talk about one and not talk about the other.

I'm not arguing that we should or shouldn't make the server age appropriate, it's just that it can only be totally kid friendly, or totally balls out... otherwise the line is too skewed.

But there is a grey area. Most people are okay with being exposed to one thing but not another. That is why the ESRB rates things the way it does. It's not just this game is mature and this game isn't. Say a parent is completely fine with letting her kid watch sex scenes in movies but doesn't want him to see anything with blood and gore. So they find a movie with less to no gore. There is a judgment call there on what is okay and what isn't. Same thing with games. You are seeing this is black and white, I think there is a grey area there.

You can't properly admin the server that is full up of a bunch of gray areas. Otherwise you are playing favorites and the experience will differ depending on what admin is online and what kind of mood he/she is in.

On the topic of the ESRB, it rates the game General through Adults Only and it gives it's reasons for the ratings but that doesn't mean its an Mature Violent game or a Mature "Adult Situations" game, it is a Mature game period.

TF2 may have been rated adult because of it's blood and gore content but that doesn't change the fact that it is a Mature game. If the server stays the way it is today I don't have too much of an issue with that however, I'm not stupid. If someone starts coming on to lilsam or mojo or another little kid on the server I'm going to ban them faster than I put down most heavies but remember this is a mature game and in my opinion, kids should not be playing it.

But it does rate things with different kinds of "mature". Thats why the ratings say "rated M for mature for blah blah". The point the server is at now is depending on what admin is on. Unless there are preset rules for this is okay this isn't it is a game of playing favorites. Gypsy may let people get away with more or less stuff than captain would. Hell, if Captain has a bad day at work and he doesn't want to here people talking about something he could ban them all. I understand that online games are a lot harder to rate than non online games but there has to be a middle point. By the way what do you mean kids shouldn't be playing this? What is your definition of a kid? We have 12 year olds on this server should we ban them all? If your definition of a kid is what they will tolerate than does that make me a "kid"? I'm turning 19 but I just don't like listen to certain things. Should I not be allowed on the server?

I think it just comes down to using your best judgement. Obviously if there are kids on people need to respect that.

Like I said, I don't intend for it to get out of hand or for it to get so vulgar that people will leave the server after 10 minutes. I don't think there is anything to worry about.

To answer your question g_e_oss; no, I don't think kids should be on the server. 90% of the ones who play adult video games are annoying and their voices make me want to kick a puppy to make it stop. That isn't to say that adults aren't annoying as all hell on video games either but I don't want to censor what I do in an adult video game because someone decided to let a kid in. If I'm in a strip club and someone decides it's okay to bring their kids in their, I'm going to be down right pissed if the entertainment is forced to cover up. If you put yourself in an adult situation, deal with it like an adult.

I'm done, this is getting ridiculous.

Ha ha aus, you take things too seriously.

Anyway, I am going to lock this thread. Like I said, no one wants things to get out of hand and people want things to stay the same as they are now so there isn't anything left to discuss. If anyone has any issues related to this, contact me directly.
